Communication
Transforming Conflict Into Connection
Conflict is part of every relationship. But when the same arguments repeat without resolution or repair, or when they lead to big escalated fights, or periods of silence and tension, over time this will affect trust, closeness, and intimacy.
You may find that conversations escalate quickly, one of you shuts down, or you keep returning to the same issues without getting anywhere. When this happens over a period of years or longer, both partners can become more guarded and less confident that difficult conversations will go well.
Understanding the Pattern
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) looks beyond the content of an argument to understand the pattern between partners. Conflict often intensifies when one or both partners feel unheard, unimportant, criticized, rejected, or disconnected.
When this happens, people protect themselves in different ways. One partner may pursue, criticize, or push for a response while the other becomes defensive, shuts down, or withdraws. These responses can reinforce each other and create a cycle that becomes difficult to change without help.
How I Help
I help couples identify and understand these patterns, including the emotions and attachment needs that shape them. We work on slowing down reactive exchanges, communicating more directly, and responding to each other in ways that support greater security and trust. The goal is to change what happens between you when disagreement occurs so you can talk through it, rather than move into escalating or shutting down.
What Can Change
As the negative cycle becomes less powerful, couples are often better able to talk about difficult issues, understand each other's experience, and repair after conflict.
Over time, communication can become clearer, conflict less reactive, and the relationship more secure.
