Emotional Connection

Deepening Emotional Intimacy

Emotional connection is knowing can reach for your partner and your partner can reach for you. It develops through everyday experiences of feeling loved, understood, supported, and important to one another. Connection can also be strengthened through vulnerable emotional sharing and having the sense that you and your partner have a level of depth, trust and safety that you have with no one else.

You may care deeply about each other and still feel disconnected. Conversations may have become mostly practical, affection may have decreased, or you may simply feel more like roommates than people that truly love each other.

Understanding Emotional Connection

From an attachment perspective, close relationships provide an important source of emotional security. We need to know that the person we depend on is accessible and responsive, particularly when we are vulnerable, distressed, or need support.

Stress, unresolved conflict, unhealed relational injuries, major life transitions, financial challenges, parenting, and long-standing relationship patterns can interfere with this connection. Over time, partners may share less of themselves and become less responsive to each other, creating distance even when the relationship remains important to both people.

How I Help

Using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), I help couples understand what has contributed to the distance between them and identify the patterns that make emotional connection difficult.

We work on increasing emotional openness and responsiveness so that each partner can communicate more clearly and respond to the other with greater understanding.

What Can Change

As emotional security strengthens, couples often become more comfortable turning toward each other, sharing what matters, and relying on one another for support.

The goal is not constant closeness. It is a relationship in which both partners can experience connection, maintain their individuality, and trust that they can find their way back to each other after periods of distance.
